Math assessment

If your child has me for math class, they will have an assessment when they return from break next week. I sent home with them a practice assessment on the 18th. They can always- and I highly encourage them to- go onto www.zearn.org to help study for this assessment. I reset all of their accounts back to the beginning of this unit before break.

If you need a copy of the practice assessment- please email me twhalen@highlineacademy.org and I will happily respond with a copy. :)

December 8th Colorado Gives Day

If Each Family gave $30 on Colorado Gives Day…
Then Highline can ensure:
• Small class sizes
• Strong Liberal Arts
• Increased technology
• Rigorous Education
The funding that Highline receives from the State is not enough to meet our needs. We have a
2015-16 fundraising goal of :
to help maintain our strong
educational values.
• If every family gave a one-time donation of $234,
we would REACH  our goal for the YEAR
• Your family may choose to sponsor another family
• REACH Out to local businesses to ask if they could
donate to Highline on Colorado Gives Day. Please
stop by the front office to pick up a Donor Sheet.

How it works: All donors must type “SOUTHEAST”in the
Special Instructions section to ensure that funds go
directly to the Southeast campus.
1. Log on to www.coloradogives.org
2. Search for Highline Academy
3. Click DONATE NOW
4. Enter donation amount
5. Donation type: CO Gives Day

PIES!

Highline’s Annual Gratitude Celebration
Tuesday, Nov. 24th
In honor of the many fall holidays celebrated in our school community, Highline will host its annual Gratitude Celebration on Tuesday, November 24th. This tradition dates back to the very beginning of Highline.  All classes take a pause and reflect upon all there is to be grateful for, all while eating pie!

What is needed:
• Each classroom needs at least 4 donated pies (no homemade pies, no Village Inn pies (they use peanut oil in the pies), and no nuts, please). Please make sure the pies are pre-baked and not frozen.
• Dessert plates, forks and napkins.
When:
• Pies should be delivered to the school on November 23rd or the morning of November 24th.
• We would like parent volunteers to help with the celebration. Please contact Marisol England at the front office if you are able to help.

Third grade is celebrating from 2:45- 3:20.

Science Project- Nervous System

Due December 1st, 2015!!!! (Ms. Whalen's class)
Due December 4th, 2015!!! (Ms. Neuhart's class)

Your final for the Nervous System Unit is to make a model of the brain.
You may use any materials that you can find around the house.  Some ideas for things to use are: dry noodles, beans, clay, play dough, cardboard, Legos, baked pan cookies with icing. Just about anything will work as long as it does not create a mess in the classroom; no ice sculptures or ice cream models.      :)
You may not just draw a picture on paper, but you may glue things to poster board or cardboard, or build the model any other way you would like to. This is your unit ending final grade. I am looking to see what you have learned during this unit and how you are able to communicate that learning to me. Please show me that you care by spending some time and effort on this project and it will reflect in your grade. The majority of your grade will be the oral interview, but your project will be at least 1/3 of it. The entire project will have 30 possible points to earn.

You brain model will need to include:
• Cerebrum
• Cerebellum
• Brain stem/medulla
• Spinal cord

You will need to explain each area of the brain and what its function is to me during our oral interview.

Extra credit: it is not necessary but if you are looking for 5 extra points you can also include a model of a nerve. It must include the cell body, dendrites and an axon.

You can turn in this project any time before the 1st (Whalen) or 4th (Neuhart), but it must be turned in by the due date. If it is turned in late, you will lose 5 points for each day it is late.

If you are in need of supplies to create your project, please let me know ASAP.

Science study guide

Bones Unit Exam Study Guide 2015

Students also have a packet of bones that is used as a study guide.

Students should be able to:

  • Label 20 bones of the human body. (word bank will be provided)
  • Identify the number of bones in an adult human body. (206).
  • Name the three functions of the skeleton as form, protection and movement.
  • Name the largest, longest bone in the body as the femur.
  • Describe how bones are made up of four layers: “bone skin”, compact bone, spongy bone and bone marrow.
  • Explain the reasons how we know that bone is a living thing. They heal themselves. They grow. They make blood.
  • Name the five types of joints and be able to label them on the skeleton.
    • Hinge joint- Opens and closed only. (fingers, toes, knees and elbows)
    • Pivot joint- swivel- up and down and back and forth. (wrists, elbows and neck)
    • Ball and socket- can move in any directions (shoulders and hips)
    • Gliding joint-  bones must move together- (spine)
    • Locked joint- anywhere two bones have grown together and will never come apart. (Skull)
  • Define
    • ligaments as tissue that connects bone to bone
    • Tendons as tissue that connects muscle to bone
    • Cartilage as the tissue that is known as soft bone like that in our nose and ears. Also, as the jelly like substance found in between bones which reduces friction.
    • Joints are where two bones meet.

Vacation days

If you are planning a vacation or will be absent and know ahead of time, it's always great for me to know beforehand. Please just shoot me an email (twhalen@highlineacademy.org) Here are some things to consider when requesting work before the class has taken place:
1. My plans are fluid. If students understand new concepts quickly, we move quickly through lessons. If they have difficulty, we slowdown. It's not often possible for me to predict the pace of class.
2. If work has already been copied, I'm happy to give it to your child. If not, they will need to pick it up upon their return. I often print copies the day before we use them, in case changes need to be made.
3. My class operates heavily on class discussion. Missing school inevitably means that content will be missed that cannot be made up. Your child will most likely know the topic of our discussions on the day that they miss. Encourage your child to do some research on the topic. Take them to the library, or encourage online searches. This will build background knowledge and context.
4. To read the Highline Academy Family Handbook, and it's official policy on Make up Work, please click here and scroll to page 9.

Notes from Ms. Garofoli

Staff Changes

We just wanted to inform everyone that Mr. Aiyeleka is no longer employed at Highline Academy Charter School. We are thankful for his long service with the organization and only wish him the best with his endeavors. We are working on hiring for this position and will communicate to the community when we finalize something.

Literacy Night Tonight     (5:30-7:30)

Wear your pajamas, bring your favorite stuffed animal, and enjoy some free snacks with storytellers, teachers and librarians. And, of course, buy books to support reading at home and our school library. We are half way to reaching our goal of 2,400 books sold!!

 Book Corner

I would encourage families of students ages 9 and up to read the book, Wonder, by RJ Palacio. This book teaches all of us the importance of accepting people for who they are and our differences.

Birthday celebrations this year

For the last few years we have been able to have our birthday celebrations either right at the end of the day or just before lunch. This year our schedule does not allow for that so we are changing it up a little. Plus it is healthier for the kids!
So on the last Friday of the month during DEAR, we will celebrate that month's birthdays. Healthy snacks only will be served like popcorn, fruits and veggies. We still have ELA at the end of the day and would prefer not to sugar up the students before sending them on to ELA!

We will do July, August, September birthdays on Friday Sept. 25.
October birthdays Thursday Oct. 29
November birthdays Tuesday, Nov. 24
December birthdays Friday, Dec. 18
January birthdays Friday January 29
February birthdays Friday Feb. 26
March birthdays Friday March 25
April birthdays Friday, April 29
May, June birthdays on Friday June 3 (Last day of school)

Thanks!

Science assessment on Tuesday

Ecology Study Guide…..Assessment 4/28

What is a food chain? Transfer of energy through producers, consumers and decomposers that creates the balance of nature.

The members of a food chain

Sun: the first step in the food chain- gives energy to producers

Producer (plants): They make their own food from the energy they get from the sun.  (bushes, trees, grass, weeds, veggies, fruits, etc)

Primary Consumer (herbivores): They eat the Producers which gives them energy. (bunnies, squirrels, deer, caterpillars, etc)

Secondary Consumer (Carnivores): They eat the Primary Consumers which transfers the energy to them. (foxes, bears, cats, mountain lions, dogs, wolves, birds, people, etc)

Decomposer (fungi, bacteria, worms): They break down the dead bodies’ of plants and animals which in turn transfers the energy back into the soil.

Things we can do that help the environment

Reduce- use less water, turn off lights or TVs when they are not being used

Reuse- clothing- donate or hand down, water bottles, plastic containers

Recycle- paper, cardboard, steel, aluminum cans, plastic containers, newspapers

Why is it important to have a balance in nature?

It is important to have a balance in nature because when there is more of one resource such as deer and not enough of another such as food, all the food will be eaten up which in turn will cause the deer to die out. It is important to have enough food to feed the deer, wolves to help keep the herd sizes down, which in turn will allow more food to grow.

Other Vocabulary:

Water pollution: To make water dirty from harmful liquids, trash or gas.

Air pollution: To make the air dirty from harmful gases such as exhaust from a car or smoke from a factory.

Land pollution: To make the land dirty from harmful trash not being thrown away properly.

Ecosystem: A specific community of living and nonliving things interacting in an environment.

Environment: The natural surroundings of a living thing

Compost: Adding nutrients back to the soil through old food and grass clippings

Recycle: Use again

Pure Stream: Sorting things so that like things being recycled are together (green glass with green glass, clear glass with clear glass)

Single Stream: Putting all recyclables in one container together.

Parent Night for Math

Ms. Wetzel and I are offering an evening of Eureka Math for those of you with children in our math classes (Ms. Neuhart's students' parents do not need to come). We are entering our next unit- multiplication. Normally, we would think that this would be an easy unit, but Eureka handles it differently.

You are invited to come next Thursday, February 26th starting at 5:30 to sit through a Eureka lesson on multiplication. If you are unable to come, we will be videotaping the lesson and uploading it to the blog.

Thank you!

Highline Auction

We are very excited about going to Highline’s annual Auction…are you? The Auction is such a fun way to get to know our community – there will be delicious food, great conversation and TONS of amazing items to bid on to take home! It’s a fun adult-only night out!

We are asking that all members of our community join us at this fun event to help support our students and school. Money raised will be used to help fund Performance Group teachers and grow our technology base - two things that make Highline especially unique and exceptional.

We hope to see everyone at the Wellshire Events Center on March 21, 2015!

Science assessment

Astronomy test study guide

The Astronomy unit test will be on Tuesday, February 10th, 2015.

One theory that scientists believe is that the universe was created with a “Big Bang”. There are other theories about how the universe was created.

Our universe is so large, it is beyond imagination. It continues to get bigger all the time.

Ptolemy believed that our solar system revolved around the Earth. This was believed until Copernicus (scaredy cat) published his book, right before he died, that stated we were heliocentric (sun centered).

We live in the Milky Way galaxy. Milky Way galaxy is a spiral galaxy. There is a massive black hole in the middle of our galaxy, but our solar system is on the far outside edge and therefore we are in no danger. Other types of galaxies are barred, elliptical, and irregular.

A star is a huge hot ball of glowing gasses. When a star dies it implodes creating a supernova. Black holes are created when a star with enough mass dies. The mass of the star packs into a dense ball but its weight is the same. This causes an extreme pull of gravity. Anything that comes close will be pulled in. Nothing can escape its pull and black holes never die.

Our sun is the star that gives us light and heat. Life would not be possible without our sun.

It takes the Earth 365 days to revolve around the sun (one year). It takes the Earth 24 hours to rotate on its axis (one day).

Gravity is the force that holds our universe together. Gravity keeps our planets in their oval orbits around the sun. The amount of mass something has determines how much pull its gravity has: The heavier the planet/star/moon, the stronger the pull of gravity.

Our nine planets orbit around the sun (eight planets and one dwarf planet). My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. The inner planets are the rocky planets. Past the asteroid belt, we have the gas planets. Pluto is an icy ball, but classified as a rocky dwarf planet.

There are other things that orbit around our sun such as asteroids and comets. A comet is a ball of ice, dust and gas. As it gets closer to the sun it speeds up and begins to melt. As it melts, the solar winds of the sun create a “tail” on the comet. When we see a comet, the light is seen for days or a week at a time. A meteor is space dust. As this dust enters our atmosphere the friction creates a spark that we might call a “shooting star”. The spark only last a few seconds. There are two times of year when meteor showers happen: August and November. An asteroid is a large chunk of rocky material in space. There is a large collection of asteroids orbiting the sun between the Jupiter and Mars called the asteroid belt.

An eclipse occurs when something blocks the view of something else in space. A lunar eclipse is when the view of the moon is blocked by the shadow of the Earth: Sun, Earth, Moon. A Solar eclipse happens when the moon blocks our view (perspective) of the Sun: Sun, Moon, Earth.

Constellations are groups of stars that create a picture. Constellations are used as a map of the sky. Explorers used the North Star to help guide them. Constellations appear to move as we travel through our season because we are revolving around the sun. Because of this, some early societies used the constellations as a calendar. The northern and southern hemispheres of Earth can see different constellations.

During the Ice Age, Beringia was the land bridge that connected Asia with North American. These people that lived there were hunters and gatherers. One animal they hunted was the woolly mammoth.

The Inuits live in Canada near the Arctic Ocean.

The Mound Builders lived in the Midwest and may have been killed by diseases from the Europeans.

The Anasazi lived in cliff dwellings, high above the ground, to protect themselves from their enemies.

Writing this week

Hello all!
We are continuing on with our opinion writing. Now we are transitioning into writing papers in which we attempt to persuade our reader to our opinion. In order to do this, we start our writing with Pro/Con lists about the topic. Then we use our top three reasons from the longer list to write our paper.

This week we will be writing about which makes a better pet, a cat or a dog. The students will begin by creating a Pro/Con list for both animals. You can help by helping them think through all the pros and cons for each animal. You might consider the costs, the companionship, and the responsibilities that come with pet ownership.

Thank you, as always, for your help.

Roman Holiday

Hello 3rd Grade Parents and Guardians,

3rd Grade "Roman Holiday" is Friday 1:15-3:30
January 9th.     Your student will need to bring a costume for the celebration.  We have found that a flat sheet and belt over their clothes works just fine.  They can also wear sandals if they would like.  Please send these in on Wednesday or Thursday.
Please put the costume in a bag with your student’s name on it, and send to school with them on Wednesday or Thursday

We are still in need of volunteers and snacks for our Roman Holiday program.  If interested please respond to either this notification or contact Ms. Wetzel.

Please feel free to come for all or part of this celebration.

Thanks
